Heinen's Grocery Store and Downtown Destination Brings Cleveland Trust Rotunda Back to Life

The Cleveland Trust Company building's restoration shines as a stunning example of the city's grand renewal.

The 1908 building previously housed AmeriTrust bank, later merging with Society Bank and Key Bank until becoming vacant in 1996. Finally in 2014, Geis Cos. stepped in to purchase the downtown landmark, and set to work on much-needed rehabilitation.

Heinen's Fine Foods was chosen to anchor the enticing complex, The 9, home to luxury apartments and The Metropolitan Hotel. After restoring and preserving the bank's original design in the impressive three-story rotunda, the full-service supermarket opened in early 2015, complete with original stained-glass domed ceiling and hand-painted murals.

Company founder and Cleveland Trust customer Joe Heinen passed his company, and his love for the city, to his grandsons Tom and Jeff Heinen. Combining an adoration for history, local prosperity, and fine foods, the location serves as a downtown destination, featuring popular to-go options, wine- and beer-tasting, an exquisite balcony lounge, and more
